Urodzení polygloti na cestách. Spôsoby a význam vyučovania jazykov uhorských aristokratov od konca 16. do začiatku 18. storočia

Noble polyglots on the road. Methods and importance of language teaching of Hungarian aristocrats from the end of the 16th to the beginning of the 18th centuries

Historický časopis, 2025, 73, 1, pp. 51-86, Bratislava.

Abstract: The teaching of foreign languages played an important role in the education of nobles in the early modern period, but despite this, few publications deal with this issue. Precisely the nobility belonged to those social classes of early modern society, where the phenomenon of multilingualism was most pronounced. Several languages were spoken at all European royal courts. The requirement to master languages was related to the establishment of permanent diplomatic missions at courts and the bureaucratization of state administration, further with the expansion of business contacts throughout the European continent, and also with the creation of standing armies, which had a diverse ethnic composition, from commanders to soldiers. In the presented study, we will present language teaching in those Hungarian aristocratic families, whose members graduated from the most modern form of noble education in the early modern period – the so-called Kavalierstour – or foreign study trips (Pálffy, Esterházy, Csáky, Erdődy and others). I focus on the following thematic areas: What were the contemporary ideas about the “ideal” education of a nobleman in the early modern period, and what role did language skills play in this period? Did the family environment and the region where the nobleman came from affect his language skills? I will also present the process of learning languages of the nobles, the contemporary requirements for language teachers and the specifics of the choice of languages to be learned in the Kingdom of Hungary. In conclusion, I will present the important question of the practical application of language knowledge during the diplomatic, political, statesmanship and military career of Hungarian aristocrats in the environment of the Viennese royal court and in the Kingdom of Hungary.

Keywords: Hungarian aristocracy. Language teaching. Multilingualism. Career at the courts of secular and ecclesiastical dignataries.
