Abstract: Vlasta Jaksicsová’s study offers a sounding into Husák’s post-war magazine Nové slovo (New Word) representing radical, leftist journalism in the Slovak context of this period, with an emphasis on the questions of post-war cultural politics in the context of political reflection on this period of political development. The author reflects that the given problem has been considered in older and more recent Slovak historiography, but she states that it is a relatively little studied matter. The study offers the reader an overview without much methodological or comparative ambition, but emphasizing the process of “self-Sovietization” and voluntary resignation from creative freedom among the Slovak leftist artists and intellectuals. A substantial part of the Slovak leftist writers and intellectuals were not able to analyse their place in society or the social function flowing from it. In the course of one decade, the Slovak intelligentsia adapted to fascism and communism, which had themes that were very tempting for it. Its engagement in power also showed failure and inability to learn. The first and second acts of this story were the same: the raising of political position as the fundamental and only measure of a person. Keywords: Social rebirth. Closeness to the people.
