Jozefa Esterházyho (1682 – 1748) v kaštieli Čeklís (Bernolákovo) Historický časopis, 2025, 73, 1, pp. 87-117, Bratislava. Abstract: The main goal of the study is to describe the private aristocratic library of Jozef Esterházy (József Eszterházy, Esterházy) (1682–1748) in the Čeklís manor (today’s Bernolákovo) from various points of view, based on a pilot analysis. In the beginning of the study, the authors summarise some fundamental findings of domestic and foreign researches on aristocratic libraries, which confirm the influence of aristocratic libraries on cultural and intellectual history. In the core of the study, they clarify the establishment, thematic composition, structure, building and sorting of the aristocratic library of Jozef Esterházy in the Čeklís (Cseklész) manor house, based on the main source of research, which is the historical catalogue of this library from 1749, written for the needs of the inheritance process after the death of Jozef Esterházy. In the context of Jozef Esterházy’s biographical data and also on the basis of the bookplates in preserved copies of books from Esterházy’s library, which have so far been identified in the University Library in Bratislava and in the Slovak National Archive in Bratislava, the authors discuss the acquisition effects of building this library and possible ways of acquiring literature. The study follows the thematic, linguistic, and chronological aspects of the library in connection with possible motivations for acquiring books, emphasising Jozef Esterházy’s active readership, which his biographical literature tells about.
