The construction of the Suebi in Caesar’s Memoirs of the Gallic War. Historický časopis, 2019, 67, 2, pp. 193-213, Bratislava. The name Suebi is one of the basic terms in ancient literature concerning the area between the rives Rhine and Danube. Like any descriptive term applied from outside, it developed and acquired various levels and contents. The study is concerned with the formation of the concept in Caesar’s Memoirs of the Gallic War. The author considers the familiar problem of the origin of the work. It is still unclear whether Caesar wrote it all at once or gradually. This also concerns the question of the Suebi. In this context, the author considers the Suebi as they appear in Book Six. The Suebi here recall the Suebi in Book Four and they remain Caesar’s undefeated enemies, but they also have more realistic features. They appear to be only one of the tribes, which seeks refuge from the Romans in forests. The study offers an explanation of these contradictions and analyses their place in individual parts of the work. Key words: Suebi. Middle Danube. Ancient literature. Caesar. Historický časopis, 2019, 67, 2, pp. 215-239, Bratislava. This study deals with François Baron de Tott (1733–1793), a French diplomat, general and writer. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first, we present the life of the baron, summarizing his positions, diplomatic missions and service to France, as well as his destiny as a representative of the second generation of exiles in France from the Rakoczi revolt who returned to the land of his ancestors. The following part is devoted to the origin of the baronʼs family. This research was done in Slovak archives to prove his Hungarian and Slovak roots. Finally, we analyse de Tottʼs Memoirs, which made the personality of the baron immortal, from the literary, historical, political and personal points of view. Key words: François de Tott. Diplomacy. The city theatre in Pressburg in the context of the development of city theatres in Central Europe in the second half of the 19th century. Historický časopis, 2019, 67, 2, pp. 241-263, Bratislava. The study considers the origin of the City Theatre in Pressburg at the end of the 19th century in relation to the cultural history of the city. The circumstances of the building of a new theatre by the well-known pair of architects Ferdinand Fellner jun. and Hermann Gottfried Helmer demonstrate the political and social situation in the city, which wanted to maintain a German character, while also satisfying the demand for Hungarian theatre from Hungarian members of elite urban societies. Thus, the building of the new theatre was closely connected with an effort to renew the cultural memory of the city and present its rich past using new media of cultural transfer, but it was also an instrument for the promotion of political interests. Historický časopis, 2019, 67, 2, pp. 265-288, Bratislava. This paper deals with the foundation of the Sokol organization in Brno. However, the main focus is put on the origins of exercise in the Sokol Brno I women´s units that were the biggest and the oldest unions in Moravia. The paper analyses the origins of the emancipation movement of Czech women at the beginning of the 20th century, in relation to two culture centres (Prague and Brno). Among others, it recalls a significant period of Brno’s cultural history before World War 1 from two points of view: the development of physical education and the origins of the Brno women´s movement. Obstacles that often impeded the enforcement of progressive thoughts are depicted. Prague was the leading city of Czech national life in the 19th century. However, it could not become a central point for Moravia due to the distance factor. Therefore, Brno adopted this role, although its situation was more complicated, as its population was mostly German at that time. And the German population did not support the origin of Czech national emancipation. The Sokol movement was not an exception in the process of gradual delimitation mostly against the Germans in progress since 1860 which eventually led to national liberation and independence. The institutional development of the timber trade. Historický časopis, 2019, 67, 2, pp. 289-310, Bratislava. The forestry and timber industry had strategic importance in Slovak – German economic relations in the period 1939–1945. Supplies of unprocessed logs had an important role, but also the products of the Slovak timber processing industry. Slovak–German relations developed in the sphere of the timber and timber processing trade. About 70 – 80 % of all Slovak exports of timber and timber products went to the territory of the German Reich, including the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. However, in spite of German pressure, the Slovak national economists succeeded in gradually reducing timber exports to Germany and organizing exports to other countries at more advantageous prices. The travel records of the royal chamberlain Mark of Vysoká from 1517 (edition). Historický časopis, 2019, 67, 2, pp. 311-332, Bratislava. Mark of Vysoká chamberlain to King Louis II was sent on a mission to the Ottoman Empire in 1517. His aim was to meet Prince Süleyman, son of Sultan Selim, and if possible also meet the imprisoned Hungarian envoy Barnabas Béley. Mark and his group achieved the aim of their mission in a short time – after 19 days of travel. He kept a detailed record of his stay in the city of Edirne and return journey, but only three fragments survive today. The study presents an analysis of the historical context of the mission and an edition of the surviving fragments of Mark’s record of the journey. Key words: Medieval accounts. Everyday life.
