The US State Department: Compensation versus Czechoslovak Monetary Gold, 1948–1961. Historický časopis, 2021, 69, 2, pp. 293–316, Bratislava. Abstract: After the end of the Second World War, Europe and the whole world faced a multitude of open questions and problems. The significant issues included dealing with the results of the war and the establishment of an international order that would minimalize the possibility of the outbreak of another world conflict. We know today, that after the defeat of the common enemy, the world did not follow the course of co-operation, but of bipolar confrontation of the USSR and USA, two super-powers with regimes based on different values and ideologies. Some questions were successfully solved, but others remained unsolved mainly for political reasons. They dragged on through the decades of the Cold War and were reflected in bilateral relations. Those concerning Czechoslovakia and Czechoslovak – American relations included the issues of the Czechoslovak monetary gold and compensation for American property in Czechoslovakia nationalized in 1945. The present study have limited the problem of the Czechoslovak gold and compensation to the question of how the US State Department dealt with these problems, or what influenced its actions, especially in the 1950s. Tripartite Commission for the Restitution of Monetary Gold. Resumé: US-Außenministerium: Entschädigung versus tschechoslowakisches Währungsgold in den Jahren 1948–1961. Die tschechoslowakisch-amerikanischen Beziehungen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden zusätzlich zu den breiteren bipolaren Beziehungen zwischen Ost und West durch zwei offene Hauptfragen kompliziert: Prags Widerwille, den vertraglichen Verpflichtungen nachzukommen und das 1945 in der Tschechoslowakei verstaatlichte amerikanische Eigentum zu kompensieren, und Washingtons Weigerung in der Tripartite Commission for the Restitution of Monetary Gold, 18,4 Tonnen tschechoslowakisches Währungsgold zurückzugeben. Das US-Außenministerium hat seine Genehmigung für die Rückgabe von Gold von der Erledigung der Entschädigung abhängig gemacht und die vorliegende Studie zeigt seine konsistenten Einstellungen (kein Gold ohne Entschädigung) in den 1950er Jahren. Die Frage der Entschädigung und des Goldes wurde erst im Januar 1982 mit der Unterzeichnung des Abkommens zwischen der Regierung der Tschechoslowakischen Sozialistischen Republik und der Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika über die Erledigung bestimmter offener Forderungen und finanzieller Fragen gelöst. Die vorliegende Studie basiert auf Archivquellen des tschechoslowakischen Außenministeriums, der Tripartite Commission for the Restitution of Monetary Gold und des US-Außenministeriums.
