Abstract: The article deals with the history of the Slovak National
Committee of Historians (SNKH) from its creation in 1990 until the year 2022. It
also informs about the participation of Slovak historians in international
congresses of historical sciences since the establishment of the ICHS in 1926.
Before the establishment of the independent Slovak Republic in 1993, the SNKH
participated in ICHS events as part of the nationwide Czechoslovak National
Committee of Historians, to which it nominated its representatives. The SNKH
took an active part in organizing the ICHS general assembly in Prague in 1992.
Thanks to these activities and contacts, the ICHS management after the division
of Czechoslovakia made a decision on the succession of both national committees—Czech
and Slovak—in the ICHS, which was formally approved at the general assembly in
Montreal in 1995. The SNKH became a democratically elected body of the Slovak
Historical Society (SHS), which represented the Slovak community of historians.
Its task was to coordinate the activities of Slovak historians at the
international level. The main list of contents of the SNKH was to acquaint the
world historical community, especially at ICHS congresses, with the results of
historical research in Slovakia. The SNKH gradually fulfilled this role. The
congress in Amsterdam in 2010 was particularly successful in this regard, with
up to 8 contributions by Slovak historians. In the summer of 2026, the ICHS
congress in Leipzig will discuss its next future, which is also an opportunity
for Slovak historians and the management of the SNKH to think about their future
direction.
